| I figured that would be the case, but I am well-prepared for that and it makes me happy to see Liberians in movies, nonetheless. :) | |

| ....I am so happy that Liberians are trying to compete and even venture in the movies business. The movie industry in Nigeria is paying lots of their population over there and this empower them and takes burden off their government. so we can wish them well and support them and see what comes out.. How can someone buy online or even put stuff online...don't know how to do it, can some one help out here. send me pm if you can. cheers | |

| I have heard... humm
The small-small traveling I been doing around West Africa...Ghanaian and Nigerians hard to accept the truth like we Liberians, but lets consider that a plus.
Normal-normal day... I saw, the traditional dramas, which started the Malawala-Balawala. Then I started seeing 'Neighbour', and then 'Bendu Sudan', 'Three Is A Couwd', and then just before the war - came 'Gee-ba-mu'/'Come Lets Go'...my favourite.
I don't know if you guys ever saw any of the above, but recently I was privileged to re-see Malawala-Balawala, and being so critical of the Nigerian films...I decided to watch with eagle eyes. The quality of the movie was, by then, very good in terms of sound, and no sequels.
Then the dreams and talents died: many years of gap: where new generation member had never in their lives seen a telephone.
The Nigerian and Ghanaians files are good and getting better, but at a slow rate. I hate Indian films, but have never resisted seeing one...as the stories are all lovely and educating. For the Nigerian films, I love the fun. And I am not too into the Liberian movie...I at this point agree that it ain't very sweet, but there was one made by the Lawrence Fishburn (American Actor) production, just around 1994-6. I was a hit and had Rivoli over-crowded for a week.
But if we should say Hollywood, Bollywood, Nollywood, and Lollywood... then we need improvement with a touch of class. Cuz I think the Liberian actors/actresses see too much of Nigerian films, and tries to imitate.

| I must agree with you that because Nigerian films have dominated the market, many of the Liberia actors/actresses will once a while slip into Nigerian mannerisms, accent etc. Some of the films are being produced and directed by Nigerians, so they don't really see the flaw of showering money on a performer etc. as something that is associated with Nigerian culture. However with time these will be realized and dropped from Liberian films. Hey, try something new, you could be one good critic and that will help the industry. You can only be if you get into watching the Liberian films and bring out all the flaws. - McNeal wrote:

| I rather being a realist to a critic. But I will take your advice...and try seeing newer LIB movies.
In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is more meaningful than our criticism designating it so.

| ..yep, enjoy the LIB films, and you will soon see them improve with time. I too enjoyed the malawala balawala series of old, especially my "old man Gonda". came "the refugee boy" etc. All these films were so good to watch...but then we weren't comparing them to other films (there were no Nigerian films etc. to compare them to). So now that we have other bigger film industries to compare to, it is all better now. | |

| Nigerians are business minded and supportive too. Many Liberians wouldn't venture into anything until it is all over the place. But, the war even helped some Liberians eyes to open. - candygirl wrote:

| It will take time ofcourse. No one wants to take the money they have to pay their generator light bill with to support show business. But all the same we have to remain positive. - candygirl wrote:

| I second the motion. I hope I did not sound too 'non-Liberian' 'bout the movie thing, but before the cold war...countries that stood strong are not as viable as before. But that does not mean we should not be more innovative and intuitive. Unique, you are right 'bout this support thing, and as well as Liberians engaging into to 'proven successful' businesses. And that is one good characteristic of true Liberians. Good is that the war's main advantage was for some of us to know that there are other countries around us. Traveling actually transformed me... It's good and it teaches one permissiveness. If I am not freaked out by the movies, then the Hip-co style of music is already affecting me. | |

| : Whaaat....let me 'vok' the song for you. You mean 'Kakaleka' and which one ma? Now this is another thing. If you were blinded-fooled from somewhere to Monrovia...you would think you are in Accra. We play a lot more foreign music. One reason was that we had no such nice music as to compare to the foreign beats. Now that our music are far more better than some... we still have reasons not to like our LIB music... and that is that they say a lot of silly things. But when I was in Ghana, I had a GH girl who wanted me to learn Twi, which I did not, and she was always shying away from interpreting GH songs I loved. She said the were not saying anything of importance. So that it there. Some are indeed trash...but I am happy that: Just the same way our gospel musicians were imitating the Nigerians (I say, I could hardly differentiate between our artiste and the Nigerians)...til they found their voice...I am sure it's gonna workout for the movie guys. May I bring back the population thing? If 25% of the total population ( 2008 est. 18,373,060) in Cote d'Ivoire purchase an album produced by a mucisian... at the price of $0.50 (which is 3 times + more)... then you are already a millionaire.I saw musicains from slumbs get rich (eg. Salopa, Garagist, Petit Denis, Youle...) Unlike Liberia... Investors will come here, but for resources of the earth (that which we have not much for the long run). Why would some investor want to make tyres in Liberia when there are ain't much people to buy the tyres? They are just gonna keep spending on exportation of thier products..., but tha can't happen in Niger or Ghana or Cote d'Ivoire...where they people plenty like ants. Unlike them, everybody can fit in Monrovia...as you can already see. | |

| Candygirl, you are so right, many of the LIB songs have been considered trash and mostly not selling because if you listen to them keenly, they were very insulting especially to the Liberian women. "..I see ur butt looking like dumbtruck" etc. everything they sang seemed to be to diss insults out. That earned them nothing and with critism some of the wise ones were able to make a change. All know that women are big buyers, but what woman want a music that is ridiculing women?? 2 Face went into bigger fame with his "African Queen" record. Hope the Liberian music artist take this as a word to the wise. | |

Hope the Liberian music artist take this as a word to the wise. but I bet if they was singing in another dialect it would sell...it's just because you can understand what they saying ...I'm being real...cause 1/2 of those song I don't have a clue what they are saying, but the beat is hot. I still don't know what Brenda Fassie is talking about in that Vuli Ndlela sone...but when it came out....come see people running to the dance floor.

| GQ, what you don't know don't hurt. Thinking about BF Vuli, I really hope we had not been dancing to insults in that music cause it was one of my favs. But these LIB songs that I can clearly hear them cussing us...hmm, they will not get my dime. They changing anyway...they praising us now so we can patronize them. | |
