The Alliance for Peace and Democracy has announced the launch of the Gabriel Baccus Matthews Democracy Foundation on June 22. According to a release, the day will coincide with the Progressive Teachers’ Day, traditionally celebrated in El Saalvador and Soweto. The APD Secretariat described the late Matthews as a comrade who is being remembered by the frontline National Democratic Progressive Forces.
A statement issued said Mr. Matthews was also being remembered for his unwavering fight and crusade for multiparty democracy in Liberia. The statement recognized the gallantry of the late Gabriel Baccus Matthews for putting up a stiff challenge against the former ruling True Whig Party. The release said former Interim President Amos Sawyer will deliver the keynote address at the Monrovia City Hall.
Dr. Sawyer will speak on the topic: The Historical Perspectives of the Struggle for Democracy in Liberia, the Journey So Far. Other speakers for the occasion include former Chief Justice Cllr. Chea Cheapo and Oscar Jaryee-Quiah. (S tar Radio)
