| (MONROVIA-January 7, 2009): The Commission set up three months ago by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to investigation an alleged email scandal has submitted its report to the President. Making the presentation on Wednesday at the President’s Foreign Ministry office, the head of the Commission, Professor Elwood Dunn, said the Commission had completed its work and was pleased to submit its findings to the President. The 32-page report, Dr. Dunn said, contains an Executive Summary, findings and recommendations.
Of the more than USD$250,000 provided for the Commission’s work, Dr. Dunn said approximately USD $161,000 was expended to hire and pay external experts who assisted the Commission in its work, while about USD $82,000 was used by the Commission for operations. The Commission, Professor Dunn said, is returning to Government about USD$23,000.
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has meanwhile thanked the chairman and members of the Commission for the report. The Liberian leader assured the Commission that the report will be reviewed and its contents released to the public. Appropriate action, the President said, will be taken in keeping with the recommendations of the Commission.
President Johnson Sirleaf announced the establishment of the Ad-hoc Independent Commission in October 2008 to investigate alleged improprieties by certain officials of Government in reference to purported email exchanges published on FrontPage Africa, a US-based Liberian website.
