Baltimore, Maryland -

D

r. Joseph M. Woah-Tee, a candidate in the 2005 Presidential elections in Liberia is dead.

Details of the former Presidential candidate’s death remains sketchy but early reports suggest that Dr. Woah-Tee was shot early Sunday morning as he returned to close up a rental entertainment spot he rents in the Baltimore area. He was taken to John Hopkins Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

“We woke this morning with this sad news which really broke our hearts,” Anthony Kesselly, President of the Union of Liberian in the United States told FrontPageAfrica Sunday. Kesselly says a family member confirmed Dr. Woah-Tee’s death to him early Sunday morning.

Likely victim of robbery

The late Dr. Woah-Tee
Alicia Dugan Sykes of Dugan/Sykes Consulting Services, who worked as a consultant to Dr. Woah-Tee’s presidential campaign in 2005 told FPA Sunday that she had spoken with Dr. Woah-Tee's daughter who confirmed that Dr. Woah-Tee has indeed been killed. “Evidently, he was at his community center last evening when two uninvited men tried to steal money from the center. Dr. Woah-Tee argued and tussled with them and one of the men pulled a gun and shot him in the chest. Oh my God, I cannot believe this has happened. Please pray for his wife Celcilia and his children.”

Tributes pouring in

Tributes are already been paid to the former progressive by various Liberian organizations in the U.S

ULAA issued the following statement Sunday:

“In view of this heart-numbing development, ULAA National President Anthony Kesselly, early this morning, placed phone calls to express the Union’s condolences with family members, through Dr. Woah-Tee’s brother, Dempster Woah-Tee, ULAA Council of Eminent Persons Chairlady Mydea Reeves-Karpeh, Liberian Association of Maryland Interim President Izax Smith, and President Joe Flomo Matthews of the United Bong County Association in the Americas. The late Dr. Woah-Tee’s widow, Mrs. Cecelia Woah-Tee, terribly struck by this unbearable situation, was not available as she was inside the Hospital with Baltimore City and Maryland State criminal justice officials. Dr. Woah-Tee was a towering personality not only in his Maryland Liberian Community but also in the umbrella Diaspora Union. He served as ULAA President from 1982 – 1983. Up to his untimely demise this morning, Dr. Woah-Tee continued to serve the Union dutifully. He was appointed by National President Kesselly recently to serve as one of the advisors to the ULAA National Constitution Review Committee while he remained very active in the ULAA Council of Eminent Persons. The Union is deeply saddened by this irreplaceable loss.. May his soul, and the souls of all Union foot soldiers and leaders departed, rest in perfect peace. May light perpetual shine upon him.

Another organization, The Association of Liberian Organizations in the Americas (ALOA) said in a statement Sunday that it learned that the Late Woah-Tee was shot in his place of domicile early this A.M.

“ALOA wishes to extend its warmest condolence to the Woah-Tee's family, the leadership and members of the Liberian Community of Baltimore and citizens of Liberia’s Diaspora communities for the lost of their husband, father, uncle, and community activist Dr. Joseph Woah-Tee. ALOA believes that a community of good people must be hailed for the hard work they performed during their journey in life, a journey that the Late Community Activist passed through so successfully.”

ALOA, therefore, regrets the lost of one of Liberia's fallen literary educator, and prays with the family, most especially his wife and children, in these times of their bereavement. ALOA hopes that the Late Joseph Woah-Tee will sit on the right side of the God of our fathers.

ALOA finally mourns with you, with a quote from John Donne (1572b- 1631), in his book "Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions" who said, "No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." May his soul and all other souls departed, rest in perfect peace.

Born August 16, 1948, Dr. Tee, a native, a son of Bong County, ran under the banner of the Labor Party of Liberia and was also the founder of the Woah-Tee Progressive Movement.

Great losss to Bong County

Born in the town of Gbaomu, Bong County, on August 16, 1948, Dr. Woah-Tee came to the United States in 1978 at the dispatch of then President William R. Tolbert, to serve as Ambassador to the City of Baltimore, Maryland from its Sister City of Gbarnga, Liberia.

Dr. Tee earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Liberia as well as two masters degrees in the United States from Morgan State University and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Dr. Woah-Tee placed 14th out of 22 candidates, receiving 0.6% of the vote in the Oct. 2005 elections.

Declaring his candidacy for the Presidency in 2005, Dr. Woah-Tee said "The time has come for the people of Liberia to take control of their own destiny. The Liberian people desperately want and deserve change. I represent that change and today I announce my candidacy for President of the Republic of Liberia".

Dr. Woah-Tee described his campaign as one based on "Partnership" and "Good Governance". In describing the challenges facing the people and new government of Liberia, Dr. Woah-Tee laid out his vision for the future of Liberia. "We must rid ourselves of the corruption and dictatorial practices of the past and return governance to the people of Liberia and move aggressively to address the humanitarian needs of our country by pressing the international community to fulfill their commitments from the Donor Conferences so that we can demonstrate Liberia's capacity for self sustainability" Woah-Tee said.

Dr. Woah-Tee ran on a platform aiming to address critical issues of health care, housing, sanitation, power generation and other basic infrastructure needs, education, transportation and the environment. Dr. Woah-Tee stated that under his Administration there would be a recasting of both military and civil security forces. "We must re-establish the people of Liberia's trust in government and the acceptance of a strong military and global intelligence presence dedicated to protecting our borders, building international alliances and combating terrorism" Woah-Tee said.

Dr. Woah-Tee was married and the father of 5 children.
