| Monrovia – The Central Bank of Liberia(CBL) today promised to submit to GAC the financial statements of GOL 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 fiscal years on June 20,2008. The latest information comes in the wake of pressing demand from the GAC to CBL opting for financial statements.
| Central Bank Governor Mills Jones | However, the Auditor General(AG) of Liberia,John S.Morlu, II has expressed disagreement about the timeline set by CBL. He said since last year November 2007,CBL was requested to make available the financial statements and this a long overdue.
"By Friday of this week, CBL financial statements of GOL 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 fiscal years must be sent to GAC because the specified audit period is nearing to and end," Auditor General Morlu said Wednesday. The CBL’s decision to finally submit the financial statements come a day after Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf requested the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) to provide all financial documents that is being requested by the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to facilitate its work. The decision also comes follows a show of frustration on the part of the GAC that both the Central Bank and the Finance Ministry have been delaying submission of documents to finalized the audits . On Monday, the GAC informed the public that two government institutions (Ministry of Finance and the CBL) has stalled the work of the Commission due to their refusal to present relevant documents to the auditors to do their work. On Tueday, during a surprised visit to the GAC, Sirleaf said her government has nothing to hide and pleaded with the two institutions to cooperate. Sirleaf said she was informed by the Auditor-General that the commission has received some documents from the Ministry of Finance. “As he explained to me, he has received some of the documentation from the Ministry of Finance. He has received some of the responses from some of the issues raised with them. He needs more and he needs time for the Ministry of Finance to respond."As for the Central Bank, Sirleaf said it is the question of the government’s bank statements. "There’s no secret in that. I just think sometimes the media can stretch these things to make it look like people are at animosity. We all are moving towards the same goal," the President said. | |
